It may be only 90 miles from New York City and her frenetic pace, but the area of Long Island generally referred to as “The Hamptons” is a world apart. As warm spring days signal summer’s arrival, this sleepy peninsula that divides the Atlantic and Long Island Sound begins to awaken, and readies itself for another summer season. Here, linen capris and floppy hats replace city attire, and days are spent sipping cocktails at rustic tables with bare toes in the sand. From the chic boutiques and trendy waterside restaurants helmed by Michelin-starred chefs to charming family-run vineyards and roadside stands peddling fresh strawberries, sweet corn, and rhubarb pie, the Hamptons provides the spectrum of summertime vibes.
From East Hampton, with its beautiful beaches, upscale shopping, fabulous restaurants and stunning private homes, to the celebrity-laden village of Southampton; to Montauk, on the easternmost point, where the ocean takes center stage and the sunsets are memorable, each town in this iconic region offers something for everyone.
For a region surrounded by water, the opportunities for boating and yachting are endless, but the most popular destinations are nestled in the calmer waters of the Long Island Sound, where the port towns of Sag Harbor, Greenport and the beautiful Shelter Island offer their own blend of summer vibes and are perfect for day or weekend yacht charters.
The centuries-old village of Sag Harbor embodies the essence of New England. This once bustling whaler’s port and writers’ colony takes great pride in its heritage, boasting cultural activities, preserved historic homes and gourmet restaurants at every turn. Worth a visit are the Marine Park and WWII Memorial, as well as the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum. Stroll down Main Street with its shops, artisan boutiques, and hidden inns, or sip rosé at Wölffer Estate Vineyard or any of the charming restaurants and bars that line the pristine beaches. Dine at Lulu Kitchen & Bar for authentic, simple cooking; toast the sunset at the Beacon, or go “aquaponic” at Page 63 Main. For entertainment, don’t miss a comedy show, musical, or special performance at Bay Street Theater.
A former whaling port and oystering center, the historic village of Greenport is rich in nautical history but also ranks among the top yachting destinations in North America. The village offers a variety of museums that harken back to days gone by, while farmers’ markets, wineries and plenty of summer events mean there is always something exciting underway. In Greenport you can indulge in the perfect summer burger or lobster roll or relax with a boozy brunch while the DJ spins chill lounge vibes.
As its name implies, Shelter Island is nestled between Long Island’s north and south forks. Largely a nature preserve, the 12-square-mile island is home to one of the oldest yacht clubs in America. From globally-inspired shopping to being seen at the seaside hideaway of Sunset Beach, Shelter Island embodies elements of a French Rivera vibe from yesteryear. Shelter Island offers the perfect element of summer fun, whether it's a breezy bike excursion, sunkissed beach volleyball game or an afternoon clambake. For a memorable Italian-inspired dining experience, enjoy a game of bocce ball with your homemade gnocchi with duck ragu at Caci Shelter Island.
