His career began as a racing sailor in Biloxi, Mississippi, followed by 4 years of selling sailboats as well as working as a sailing instructor. He then enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard for a 4-year tour and was based in Puerto Rico serving as quartermaster. During his time on board, he logged many hours at the helm of an 82' USCG cutter doing surveillance trips, drug interdiction and search and rescue efforts. His last year in the Coast Guard was spent in Houston, Texas, as a Ship Traffic Operator on the Houston Ship Channel.
